World Health Organization Sounds Warning Over Critical Shortage of Weight-Loss Injections

Fewer than 10% of individuals eligible to benefit from obesity jabs including Wegovy are able to get them, states the World Health Organization as it releases its initial guidance on the drugs.

With in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now obese, it is urging broader and more equitable availability to this class of drugs.

Per estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidelines affirms that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be addressed with comprehensive and lifelong treatment," remarked WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, limited production capacity, and supply-chain constraints are major hurdles to broad access to the treatments that can aid individuals in losing substantial body mass, notes the body.

Weight-Loss Drug Supply Crisis

Even under the present most favorable case, the manufacturing of these medications could only cover about 100 million people – under 10% of the global need, according to the WHO.

The guideline urges governments and firms to increase availability, through measures like voluntary licensing.

The intellectual property rights on the active ingredient – the main ingredient of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is scheduled to end in several nations in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Jabs Work

These medications mimick a biological compound to reduce digestion speed, reduce hunger and enhance feelings of fullness so users reduce food intake.

People commonly start to lose weight in the initial weeks of commencing the weekly injections.

Studies suggests users may regain a significant portion a year later of discontinuing the treatment, when their typical hunger return.

Being above a healthy weight increases your chance for contracting diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some malignancies.

Obesity concerns individuals in countries worldwide and was responsible for over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
