The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.
"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
