Our Premier Record of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Number One Spot.

At first glance, Lux might appear more like an arduous university challenge than the latest popular music project from a musician whose last single featured an international K-pop star. Divided across 4 different parts and sung in thirteen tongues, it is a dizzying classical-tinged work exploring feminine mystery, religious transcendence, and physical transformation, often via the perspective of different women saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme treated with raw openness elsewhere—soars heavenward here, supported by the constant sound of a major symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter within a vast list of collaborators. The pure ambition by itself makes the efforts of other pop stars appear rather small.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

That this album manages to avoid overly academic chin-stroking is nearly a miracle, and full praise going to Rosalía. Although it's not her first album to alchemize the past with the present, its ambitions feel much greater on Lux, with the tightrope walk far more dramatic. What really raises her fourth release, beyond its complex tunes, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is a core spirit of fun. Much like the iconic artist at her height, you find a captivating quality to the vocalist's voice that pulls the listener up in its whirlwind. Even when she's tearing hearts apart, the listener nevertheless want to be alongside her through the ride.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

That playful energy comes forth clearly during the stunning Italian ballad about a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool over several moments. Then, everything falls silent, and there's a spontaneous giggle and a comment prior to a comically over-the-top string crescendo crashes in like cartoonish impact. The song then shifts into the frenetic single driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist Björk.

"The charm of this album is that you never quite understand—nor wish to know—what it is going next."

Almost each song ends at a completely different place than how it started. A track explores the transient trappings of celebrity over a featherlight symphony before collapsing into electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls the artist's previous trap-infused work starts off moody and sinister, with prowling vocals, before fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to soften its jagged edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Pop

A key balancing act on Lux involves straddling the line between bold innovation and mainstream accessibility. This is no coincidence that it has achieved her highest-charting release to break into the upper reaches of major markets: its heart contains a collection of truly undeniable pop songs. A song sung entirely in English builds on a refrain that feels to collect more and more nagging hooks while it spins upward. That trick gets repeated by another expansive track that expands and constricts, intertwining layered melodies like a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song seduces with its playful, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture honesty of other breakup songs, eviscerating an ex- partner described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing carry a painted-on edge, akin to a storybook figure concealing a blade: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

Lux is popular music on a maximalist level, an ambitious grasp for capital-A artistry amid of impending AI-generated sameness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of sublime elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its own built-in excess. It is an abundant source of hidden treasure that requires patience to fully explore but doesn't feels like a chore. While other big releases of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, Lux is a lavish feast at which the guests at the table, perhaps intoxicated on holy wine, flutter between conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering grief, and common gossip about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's truly restlessly inventive visionary.
