Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
