The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
