Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Police then located multiple other smeared vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials state preliminary tests show the liquid was probably human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; officials are currently not informed of any harm in association with the event," they commented.
Local authorities announced they were working "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the residents for details.
An important official commented the incident left him without words and required to be addressed quickly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist attack five years ago," he wrote on online, referring to the murder of nine victims by a shooter aiming at people of migrant background in five years prior.
